NAME

LEADER / LE CHEF: Gilles Duceppe.

BRIEF HISTORY: Formally founded in 1991 as a federal party. The Bloc began in 1990 as an informal coalition of Progressive Conservative and Liberal Members of Parliament from Quebec, who left their original parties around the time of the defeat of the Meech Lake Accord. BQ ran some candidates, officially labeled "independent" in 1990. The Bloc first fielded federal candidate under the BQ banner in 1993. In the 2006 elections, BQ won 51 seats.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Centre-left federal political party that supports Quebec sovereignty. Closely allied with the separatist Parti Québécois, a provincial-level party in Quebec, which share a nearly identical political platform. The Bloc only fields federal candidates in Quebec.
