FEDERAL "SENATOR IN WAITING":
Alberta held three largely ceremonial protest elections for the position of "Senator in Waiting" to send a message to Ottawa in support of having an elected federal Senate. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney appointed the winner of the 1989 election (Stan Waters) to the Senate in 1990. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, honoring the 2004 vote, announced in April 2007 he will appoint Brown to the next Federal Senate vacancy -- and did so in July 2007.
