Candidate for Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, June 1984. First ballot: 2nd place (out of seven candidates) with 1,067 votes - 31%. Second ballot: 2nd place with 1,398 votes (40%). John Turner won on the second ballot with 1,862 votes (54%).

Candidate for Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, June 1990. First ballot: Elected over four others with 2,652 votes - 56.8%.

Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (1990.06.20 - 2003.12.11). In the 1993 elections, the Liberals won 177 seats (a gain of 94 seats), and captured majority governing status. In the 1997 elections, the Liberals won 155 seats (a loss of 22 seats), and retained majority governing status. In the 2000 elections, the Liberals won 172 seats (a gain of 17 seats), and retained majority governing status. Resigned as Leader and retired from government in December 2003.
