Immediately after the 2008 election, Dion announced he would step down as Leader upon the election of a successor.

Candidate for Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, December 2006. First ballot: 3rd place (out of eight candidates) with 856 votes - 17.8%. Second ballot: 3rd place with 974 votes (20.8%). Third ballot: 1st place with 1,782 votes (37%). Fourth ballot: Elected Leader over Michael Ignatieff by a vote of 2,521 (54.7%) to 2,084 (45.3%).
