In the 1988 elections, the NDP won 12 seats (loss of 8 seats) and finished third place 23.6% of the vote, falling to opposition party status. In the 1990 elections, the NDP won 20 seats (gain of 8 seats) and 28.8% of the vote, capturing official opposition status. In the 1995 elections, the NDP won 23 seats (gain of 3 seats) and 32.8% of the vote, retaining official opposition status. In the 1999 elections, the NDP won 32 seats (gain of 9 seats) and 44.5% of the vote, capturing majority governing status. In the 2003 elections, the NDP won 35 seats (gain of 3 seats) and 49.5% of the vote, retaining majority governing status. In the 2007 elections, the NDP won 36 seats (gain of 1 seat) and 47.7% of the vote, retaining majority governing status.

Candidate for Leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party, March 1988. First ballot: 1st place (out of five candidates) with 631 votes - 38%. Second ballot: 1st place with 744 votes (45%). Third Place: Elected Leader over Len Harapiak by a vote of 835 (50.6%) to 814 (49.4%).
