Candidate for Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, 1996. First ballot: 5th place (out of seven candidates) with 152 votes - 6%. Second ballot: 5th place with 124 votes (5%). Gerretsen withdrew after the second ballot and endorsed Dalton McGuinty for Leader. McGuinty won on the fifth ballot.
