PARTY LEADERSHIP:
Candidate for Leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, May 1990. First ballot: Harris was elected Leader over Diane Cunningham by a vote of 7,175 (55%) to 5,825 (45%).

Leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party (May 1990 - March 2002). In the 1990 elections, the PC won 20 seats (a gain of 4 seats), and remained third overall (giving Official Opposition status to the Liberals). In the 1995 elections, the PC won 82 seats (gain of 62 seats), and won majority governing status. In the 1999 elections, the PC won 59 seats (loss of 23 seats), but retained majority governing status. Harris resigned as Leader in March 2002, and retired as Premier in April 2002.
