Candidate for Leader of the British Columbia Social Credit Party, July 1991. First ballot: 2nd place (out of 5 candidates) with 652 votes (35.5%). Second ballot: Elected Leader over Grace McCarthy by a vote of 941 (51.6%) to 881 (48.4%).

Leader, British Columbia Social Credit Party (July 1991 - March 1992). In the 1991 elections, the Socreds won 7 seats (loss of 40 seats, including Johnston's own seat), lost majority governing status, and fell to third place. Resigned as Leader in March 1992.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Johnston was the first female Premier of any Canadian province.
