Candidate for Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, November 1996. First ballot: 1st place (out of seven candidates) with 770 votes - 30%. Second ballot: 1st place with 775 votes (31%). Third ballot: 1st place with 803 votes (32%). Fourth ballot: 1st place with 968 votes (40%). Fifth ballot: Dalton McGuinty defeated Kennedy for Leader by a vote of 1,205 (53%) to 1,065 (47%).

Candidate for Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, December 2006. First ballot: 4th place (out of eight candidates) with 854 votes - 17.1%. Second ballot: 4th place with 884 votes (18.8%). Withdrew after the second ballot and later endorsed Stéphane Dion, who was elected Leader on the fourth ballot.
