Candidate for Leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party, December 1992. First ballot: 2nd place (out of nine candidates), finishing one vote behind first place candidate Nancy Betkowski. Six candidates were eliminated after the first ballot, and one other withdrew shortly afterwards. Second ballot: Klein was elected Leader over Betkowski by a vote of 46,245 to 31,722.

Leader, Alberta Progressive Conservative Party (December 1992 - December 2006). In 1993, the PC won 51 seats (loss of 8), but held majority governing status. In 1997, the PC won 63 seats (gain of 12) and held majority governing status. In 2001, the PC won 74 seats (gain of 11) and held majority governing status. In 2004, the PC won 62 seats (loss of 12) and held majority governing status. Klein retired as Leader in December 2006.
