PARTY LEADERSHIP:
Candidate for Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, May 2003. First ballot: 1st place (out of five candidates) with 1,080 votes - 41.1%. Second ballot: 1st place with 1,018 votes (39.7%). Third ballot: 1st place with 1,128 votes (45%). Fourth ballot: MacKay was elected leader over Jim Prentice by a vote of 1,538 (64.8%) to 836 (35.2%). MacKay was elected leader after making a signed promise after the third ballot to not merge the PC with the more conservative Canadian Alliance.

Leader, Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (May 2003 - February 2004). As PC Leader, MacKay and Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper signed an agreement in principal in 2003 to unite the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance Party into a united conservative party. The memberships of the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative Party voted in October 2003 to dissolve their parties and form a new Conservative Party of Canada. MacKay remained PC Leader until the party was disolved in February 2004. MacKay did not run for Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada at the March 2004 convention.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Son of Elmer MacKay (PC) of Nova Scotia, who served as an MP and Cabinet Minister from 1971-1993.
