Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada (December 1989 - October 1995). In the 1993 elections, the NDP won 9 seats (loss of 34 seats) and 6.9% of the vote. Announced decision to resign as Leader in April 1994, but remained Leader until her successor was elected in October 1995.

Candidate for New Democratic Party of Canada (December 1989). First ballot: 1st place (out of seven candidates) with 646 votes - 26.9%. Second ballot: 1st place with 829 votes (34.3%). Third ballot: 1st place with 1,072 votes (44.4%). Fourth ballot: McLaughlin defeated Dave Barret for Leader by a vote of 1316 (55.1%) to 1072 (44.9%).

MISCELLANEOUS:
First woman in Canada to lead a federal political party. First woman chair of the parliamentary caucus of any federal party in Canada. First federal party leader to represent an electoral district in a Canadian territory.
