PARTY LEADERSHIP:
Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, June 1983 - June 1993. In the 1984 elections, the Progressive Conservatives won 211 seats (gain of 108 seats) and captured majority governing status. In the 1988 elections, the PC won 169 seats (loss of 42 seats) and retained majority governing status. As announced a few months earlier -- and with his public approval ratings sharply dropping -- Mulroney retired and resigned as party leader and Prime Minister in June 1993 on his tenth anniversary as Leader.

Candidate for Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, June 1983. First ballot: 2nd place (out of 8 candidates) with 874 votes - 29.2%. Second ballot: 2nd place with 1,021 votes (34.5%). Third ballot: 2nd place with 1,036 votes (35.1%). Fourth ballot: Mulroney was elected Leader over Joe Clark by a vote of 1,584 (54.5%) to 1,325 (45.5%).

Candidate for Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, February 1976. First ballot: 2nd place (out of 11 candidates) with 357 votes - 15.1%. Second ballot: 3rd place with 419 votes (18.0%). Third ballot: 2nd place with 369 votes (15.8%). Mulroney was eliminated after the third ballot and released his delegates without endorsing either of the two remaining candidates. Joe Clark won on the fourth ballot.
